South Carolina residents who want to get a federally compliant identification card will be able to hand over documents to the Department of Motor Vehicles beginning May 15th.
After Governor Henry McMaster signed a bill in April, the state began working to become fully compliant with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005.
You need a REAL ID, passport or other federally approved identification to board commercial flights, enter federal buildings and military bases.
It is optional for South Carolina residents to change their driver’s licenses to REAL ID-compliant cards. Driver’s licenses will still work for things like voting, hospital visits, driving and applying for federal benefits.
