The South Carolina Department of Transportation is warning residents that road fixes won't happen right away after the new gas tax goes into effect on July 1.
DOT says that the way the tax is set up, they'll get a gradual increase of funds to add lanes, fix potholes and widen roads throughout the next decade. They announced a plan for the new funding on Thursday.
Their first priority is making changes to rural roads and secondary routes in an effort to decrease fatality rates. Once these problems are addressed, the DOT will move on to work on resurfacing projects, widening interstates and replacing bridges.
The initial plan is not set in stone and awaits DOT commissioners approval in June.
