Jury Awards Damages To Professor

A University of South Carolina Lancaster professor is cleared of charges that alleged he was driving under the influence, despite a lack of evidence.

A Columbia police officer took Darris Hassell to jail after a breathalyzer test showed there was no alcohol in his system. Hassell spent 16 hours in jail in February of 2014. The prosecution couldn't produce the dash cam video or a urine test that seemed to have gone missing.

After three days of testimony, a jury decided the claim against the professor was baseless. The officer who arrested the professor is no longer employed with the department. Hassell was awarded over 200-thousand dollars for his false arrest.
