The Trenton Prison riot late Wednesday night is still under investigation, but authorities point to two elements they believe contributed heavily to the situation; contraband, like cell phones in the hands of prisoners, and the thin staffing at the facility.
Two guards were injured, when inmates allegedly attacked corrections officers who tried to take away a prisoner's cell phone. What followed was a riot, an assault, damage to the dorms and fires set in the courtyards.
The state Department of Corrections reports over 900 job vacancies are currently available, of the 3900-hundred security positions statewide.
