Mayor Challenged Over Statehouse Grounds A Make-Over

The mayor of Columbia wants to use a nearly 200-thousand dollar grant to give the State Capitol grounds a "front porch" feel.

Mayor Stephen Benjamin's proposal is to add a life-size chess board, beach chairs, hammocks and corn hole games to the lawn of the Statehouse.

State Senator Katrina Shealy posted a petition requesting that the mayor withdraw his proposal on Twitter this week.

The petition says the mayor applied for the grant without consulting the State and as of last night it had nearly 700 signatures.
