Officials in Richland County are saying sunglasses given away for the solar eclipse are safe.
Authorities said yesterday that the ten-thousand pairs of eyewear bearing the county seal for next Monday's event are okay for use, despite requests that they be recalled. The Blythewood Chamber of Commerce raised concerns last week due to the items not being approved by NASA.
Officials say the sunglasses were reviewed and approved for use by the American Astronomical Society.
Meanwhile, the Richland County Library is giving away free sunglasses ahead of Monday's solar eclipse.
The system will distribute the eyewear at all branches Friday starting at 9 a.m. and while supplies last. Each person will receive one pair.
