(Columbia, SC) -- A state lawmaker is hoping to stiffen the penalties for texting and driving.
The current fine for the first offense is 25 dollars, but the new bill would quadruple that to one-hundred dollars.
The highway patrol says five people have died on state roads this year due to texting behind the wheel.
State Representative Bill Taylor of Aiken County filed the bill and says it will likely be up for debate within the next few weeks.
