School District Pays High Price For Land Belonging To Former Board Member

(Pelion, SC)  --  The purchase of land for a new middle school in Lexington County is raising some questions.

Lexington One board members voted last week to buy more than 50 acres in Pelion at seven times its assessed value.

The land was owned by former school board member Jean Haggard and her brother, but the district says any suggestion its connection to Haggard influenced the purchase price is ridiculous.

State Rep. Kit Spires, though, tells "The State" people are wondering how a district that can't afford to buy teaching supplies can spend so much on land.
