Firefighters took a moment to stop and pray at the scene where a mother and her baby were killed following a tree falling on their house in Wilmington, NC. The father was recovered from the home and taken to New Hanover County Regional Medical Center for unspecified injuries.
Despite what Wilmington Police Chief Ralph Evangelous said was an "intense" multi-agency rescue effort, the mother and child died before they could be saved from the home.
Wilmington Fire Department Chief Steve Mason stated “The rescue effort was so intense that a FEMA task force that had been pre-deployed to the area assisted with the recovery effort,” According to Chief Mason, the mother and child were trapped under an extremely large tree and pieces of the roof of the house.
