(Columbia, SC) -- The University of South Carolina is considering removing J. Marion Sims' name from a women's residence hall.
President Bob Caslen endorsed the resolution in a letter to students, staff and faculty yesterday. The proposal will now be presented to the Board of Trustees on Friday.
If they move forward with the change, the university will need to ask the General Assembly for an exemption to the Heritage Act, which prevents them from renaming state-owned buildings without a two-thirds vote of the legislature.
