Columbia City Council Amends Rental Regulations To Deter House Parties

(Columbia, SC) -- The Columbia City Council is classifying parties at rental houses as a "serious offense."

They passed an amendment to their Rental Housing regulations yesterday in an effort to deter house parties that could result in the spread of coronavirus.

If a gathering at a rental unit is broken up by police officers, a landlord's permit would get 10 points. If a landlord gets over 15 points in a year, their rental permit could be revoked.

Council members say the authority to break up parties comes from an ordinance enacted by Governor McMaster on August 2nd. It says gatherings that pose a threat to public health can be prohibited or dispersed by law enforcement.
