State Lawmakers Consider Bill For Program Similar To School Vouchers

(Columbia, SC)-- State lawmakers are considering legislation that would be similar to school voucher programs seen in other states.

The bill would create Education Scholarship Accounts under which families would get six-thousand dollars a year per student. A maximum of 15-thousand students would be eligible for the accounts, including students who are Medicaid eligible.

Families could spend the funds on books, fees, and transportation for school, but they could also use it to pay for private school tuition or a non-resident tuition if the student goes to a public school outside the district where they live.

The bill will be debated in the South Carolina Senate on Tuesday.
