(Undated) - Alex Murdaugh is now in a statewide protective custody unit of a South Carolina maximum security prison.
The South Carolina Department of Corrections says the Protective Custody Review Board met Thursday to recommend the move.
Murdaugh will join the 28 inmates with statewide protective custody classification that are put into a specialized unit separate from the general population.
Officials say Murdaugh will still receive the same privileges given to general population prisoners.
They are not identifying the location of the unit for security purposes
