Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley is clarifying recent comments she made about the Civil War.
Haley faced widespread criticism after failing to mention slavery as a cause of the war during a townhall in New Hampshire. During a radio interview Thursday, Haley said "of course the Civil War was about slavery," adding that she was speaking more broadly on the importance of individual rights and liberties for all people.
Haley on Wednesday was asked by a voter, "What was the cause of the Civil War?" She gave a lengthy response about the role of government and "the rights of the people," but never discussed slavery.
