(Columbia, SC)-- The South Carolina House is approving a bill to change how judges are selected.
The measure would change how the legislature elects judges, expanding the amount of people on the judicial screening panel and giving the governor five selections.
The bill would also remove the limit for qualified candidates the Judicial Merit Selection Commission can send to the full legislature for consideration and adds screenings for magistrate judge candidates.
The Senate passed a similar bill earlier in the legislative session, but the two chambers will now need to compromise on a final version to send to Governor McMaster.
