Verdin Becomes 3rd Woman Elected to SC Supreme Court

(Columbia, SC) -- Letitia Verdin is now the third woman ever elected to South Carolina's Supreme Court.

Wednesday, state lawmakers unanimously elected her to the state's highest court to replace Justice John Kittredge. He'll be taking over as Chief Justice when Don Beatty retires this summer. Beatty is the only Black justice on the court.

The five-member Supreme Court has been all-male since Kaye Hearn's retirement last year.

The 53-year-old Verdin has previously served on the family court in Greenville County, and the circuit court before her election to the Court of Appeals last year.
