South Carolina Officials React To Pres. Biden Ending Re-Election Bid

(Columbia, SC) -- Elected officials in South Carolina are reacting after President Joe Biden announced Sunday he is ending his re-election bid.

Democratic Congressman Jim Clyburn, who had shown support for President Biden's re-election campaign last week, issued a long statement saying in part that he is proud to follow Biden's lead in supporting Vice President Harris for the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.

Representative Todd Rutherford says "President Biden is putting our country first" and calls on voters to "come together to keep Donald Trump out of the White House."

Republicans representing the Palmetto state also made statements after the announcement. Many are calling for President Biden to resign from office entirely, suggesting he is unfit for office if he is not able to run for re-election.

U.S. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina posted on social media that "The left will stop at nothing when they're losing."
