(Columbia, SC) -- A case of a brain-eating amoeba is being confirmed in South Carolina. The Department of Public Health says the case was confirmed the week of July 7th. The amoeba is common in freshwater lakes, rivers and ponds, and is not tested for or tracked by the Department. Health officials say the amoeba is almost always deadly, but there are under ten cases each year in the U.S.
