(Columbia, SC) - A South Carolina patient with a brain-eating amoeba in South Carolina is dead. The South Carolina Department of Public Health confirmed the case of Naegleria fowleri was identified a few weeks ago. Prisma Health Children's Hospital confirmed Tuesday that a patient with the amoeba recently died. The Department of Public Health says the person was exposed to the amoeba at a lake in the Midlands- but human infection from this amoeba is still considered to be very rare.
